All Chicago released its Understanding the Success of Chicago’s Ending Veteran Homelessness Initiative (EVHI) Report today, announcing a 28 percent reduction in Chicago’s homeless veteran population since 2015. This milestone marks more than 4,000 veterans housed through the EVHI since 2015.
The EVHI is a collaborative effort driven by more than 30 federal, city, and nonprofit partners and part of national campaign to end homelessness among veterans. The EVHI Report closely details the fundamental process improvements that led to a homeless system transformation over the past three years.
The EVHI Report shows results in Chicago’s coordinated approach to reducing homelessness with the following highlights:
- Over 4,000 veterans have been housed since 2015 through EVHI.
- Since the start of the initiative in 2015, EVHI has led to a 28 percent reduction in veteran homelessness in Chicago.
- The EVHI Report found homeless veterans are being placed into permanent housing 43 percent more quickly than in 2016.
The success of EVHI is attributed to political support at the local and federal level, an unprecedented collaborative approach across committed service provider, funder, and system partners, and the use of system-wide data to drive decision-making. EVHI sparked the creation of one centralized data source that contains a by-name list of every veteran experiencing homelessness in Chicago.
“Using one system-wide data source to drive decision-making was key to the success of EVHI,” said All Chicago’s CEO Nonie Brennan. “Data allowed everyone involved in EVHI to quickly respond to challenges and track progress toward goals in real time. These new system efficiencies and other lessons learned have been used to change the approach of Chicago’s broader homelessness system.”
