Park Forest, IL—(ENEWSPF)— School District 163 School Board convened for a special session on Monday, July 23. The meeting was less than a half hour long, yet many important items were addressed.

Superintendent Joyce Carmine was thrilled to inform the board and public that all the schools in District 163 made the Adequate Yearly Progress (or more commonly referred to as the AYP) for the 2006 school year. The AYP is a statewide accountability system mandated by the No Child Left Behind Act. It requires each state to reach a set goal for testing results. The desired average set by the board of education of 60% was surpassed with an average of 70%.

“I would just like to say thank you for the school’s staff members, the board of education, the parents and the kids… really, to everyone,” said Carmine.

The board voted on and approved various motions such as the employment of a new Fourth Grade teacher at Blackhawk and a new Music teacher for Blackhawk and Mohawk, both beginning August 21st.

The resignation of three teachers were accepted: Nicole Sorensen, a fourth grade teacher from Blackhawk , Jason Zachery, a seventh grade teacher from Forest Trail Junior High, and Rachel Martin, a special education teacher assistant from Forest Trail Junior High.

The Board of Education voted in favor of using Sunset Paving for the asphalt work at both Forest Trail and Blackhawk. The company was the lowest and only bidder on the project at a bid of $42,202.24.

The “lowest responsible bidder” for the district’s new computer tables was Frank Cooney Company. The total projected cost is $20,116.20.

The final motion the board adopted was FBC Books as the “lowest responsible bidder” for the 2007-2008 yearbooks at Forest Trail Junior High. Each book will cost $17.95.
