North Dakota Pipeline Spills 176,000 Gallons of Crude Oil 150 Miles From Standing Rock
Belfield, ND –(ENEWSPF)–December 13, 2016. Late yesterday, approximately 150 miles from where the Standing Rock Sioux, more than 300 tribes, and thousands of Water Protectors peacefully assembled to protect the Tribe’s home, history, and heritage, spilled more than 176,000 gallons of crude oil into the Ash Coulee creek.
On December 5th, a landowner noticed a leak in the Belle Fourche pipeline, which is owned and operated by True Companies, but leak detection equipment did not recognize the larger leak. The pipeline has since been shut down.
In response, Sierra Club Beyond Dirty Fuels Director Lena Moffitt released the following statement:
“Once again, America is reminded that it’s never a question of whether a pipeline will spill but rather when.
“We are relieved to hear that the pipeline has been shut down, and we call for a full review to investigate how the system failed with weather that is all too common in North Dakota.”
