SEIU: House Leadership Continues to Hold Nation’s Economic Health Hostage to Irrational Demands to Block the Health Care Law

Washington, DC–(ENEWSPF)–September 30, 2013.  On a near party-line vote, the U.S. House Saturday night once again voted to undermine the Affordable Care Act, this time tying the measure to a routine but critical vote to fund the federal government. The vote, forced by right-wing extremists, pushes the government to the edge of a shutdown. Following is a statement by SEIU President Mary Kay Henry:

“Extremist members of the House doubled down on their efforts to sabotage the health law with little regard for how the looming government shutdown would affect the nation’s economic health or the hardworking people who elected them to govern. These lawmakers are well aware that the measure has zero chance of passing the Senate or being signed by President Obama, yet they continue their political posturing.

“The health care law is already working for millions of American families, including young people who can stay on their parents plans until age 26, people with pre-existing conditions, and millions of seniors. Lawmakers need to accept the Affordable Care Act as the law of the land and move on.

“Threatening the nation’s economic health to score political points and undermine the health law is nothing short of reckless and irresponsible. Reasonable Republicans should come to the table before a shutdown and support the Senate’s compromise approach.”
