Washington, D.C. —(ENEWSPF)–December 13, 2016.  Following stunning news from U.S. intelligence agencies that Russia manipulated the American presidential election in favor of President-elect Donald Trump, the Center for American Progress has called for the creation of an independent, bipartisan commission to investigate the level of manipulation by Russian hackers. The commission should have the resources, access, and mandate vital to publishing a comprehensive study containing recommendations to prevent such attacks in the future.

“In six weeks, Donald Trump and his team will take control of the executive branch and the intelligence agencies that operate within it,” said Ken Gude, CAP Senior Fellow and author of the column. “When that happens, a man who has baselessly denied the overwhelming evidence provided by those agencies that our election was hacked will have the power to bury these findings. America has a long history of bipartisan investigations into attacks on our nation. This should be no different. At this incredibly dangerous moment, a bipartisan, independent commission is vital to the preservation of our democracy.”

It is critical, the column argues, that this remain a nonpartisan issue, as it lays at the foundation of our democracy. Foreign manipulation of our political system poses an extreme threat, as does the continued denial of that manipulation in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary. A bipartisan group of senators has already called for such an investigation, and legislation has already been introduced in the House of Representatives. It also has grave repercussions for the elections being held next year in many nations allied with the United States, as Russia has a history of manipulating elections in Europe as well.
