Sierra Club: Lumber Liquidators Pleads Guilty to Importing Illegal Wood Products, Settles with Department of Justice

WASHINGTON, DC –(ENEWSPF)–October 8, 2015.  Yesterday, Lumber Liquidators, the nation’s leading hardwood flooring retailer, announced a settlement with the Department of Justice, concluding a two-year investigation into claims that the company had imported illegal wood products. For years, the company imported flooring made from illegal timber logged in Russia and laundered through China.

Under the settlement, Lumber Liquidators will plead guilty to multiple misdemeanors and one felony under the Lacey Act, which prohibits the import of illegally sourced wood products. Over the last two years, more than 150,000 Sierra Club members and supporters have asked the Obama administration to fully enforce the Lacey Act. The company will pay a total of $13.2 million dollars in fines, forfeitures, donations and community service.

In response Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune released the following statement:

“Lumber Liquidators broke the law to boost their profits, and today they are paying the price. This violation of the Lacey Act has threatened the last Siberian tigers in the world and undercut American workers and companies that play by the rules.

“Today’s announcement puts companies on notice that they must do their part to protect the planet and take precautions to source their products legally. By reducing demand for illegal timber, we can safeguard communities around the world and our climate.

“Strong environmental laws only work if they are enforced. We applaud the Obama administration for holding Lumber Liquidators accountable. The United States must continue to help lead the fight against illegal logging by fully enforcing the Lacey Act.”
