ACLU Statement on Death of Freddie Gray in Police Custody

MARYLAND—(ENEWSPF)–April 21, 2015.  ACLU OF MARYLAND STATEMENT:

“Our hearts go out to the families of Freddie Gray and others who have died in police encounters in Maryland.  Based on what we have seen, everything about the death of Freddie Gray and the way it was handled captures both the fundamental injustices of policing in America today and the reasons why communities of color have become so distrustful of police. The deaths of Freddie Gray and others are not just the product of a few ‘bad apples’ or a handful of split-second bad decisions. They are structural. We must transform policing itself, beginning with independent and transparent investigations that include community review.”
