Center for American Progress Applauds Introduction of LEAP Act to Encourage Apprenticeship Programs

Washington D.C. —(ENEWSPF)–February 27, 2015.  Following Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) and Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC)’s introduction of the Leveraging and Energizing America’s Apprenticeship Programs Act, or LEAP Act—which would create a tax credit for businesses that have apprenticeships programs—CAP President Neera Tanden released the following statement:

Apprenticeships offer businesses the opportunity to build a pipeline of skilled workers, and they offer young people higher wages, debt-free education, and a path to a well-paying career. By creating an employer tax credit to offset some of the costs associated with training an apprentice, the LEAP Act will encourage more businesses to start new apprenticeship programs. With this bipartisan legislation, Sens. Scott and Booker are taking an important step toward expanding the use of this highly successful training model.

The policies proposed in the LEAP Act are similar to the recommendation made in CAP’s recent report.
