SALIDA, COLORADO–(ENEWSPF)–February 19, 2015. The Obama administration today designated Colorado’s Browns Canyon as a national monument. The designation will safeguard the waters, rugged landscape and lower-elevation recreation opportunities of the area and comes in response to a tremendous outpouring of support from local businesses, community leaders, and conservation groups.
In response Sierra Club National President David Scott andJohn Stansfield, volunteer with the Sierra Club’s Rocky Mountain Chapter issued the following statements.
“We applaud President Obama for using his authority to protect this national treasure. The unique combination of water, wild landscape and lower elevation ridges at Browns Canyon provide four-season opportunities for people to get outside, as well as important wildlife habitat. Browns Canyon is a wonderful addition to our nation’s conservation legacy; we look forward President Obama’s continued work to secure our outdoor heritage,” said Sierra Club President David Scott.
“Safeguarding Browns Canyon has long been a priority for many here in Colorado. We thank President Obama for heeding local desires to see this area permanently protected by designating it as a national monument. The new monument will protect the natural beauty and outdoor opportunities that draw people from near and far, while boosting our economy,” said John Stansfield, volunteer with the Sierra Club’s Rocky Mountain Chapter.
