Chicago Mayoral Candidate Bob Fioretti’s Reaction to Gov. Rauner Budget Address

Chicago, IL –(ENEWSPF)—February 18, 2015. The following is a statement from mayoral candidate Bob Fioretti reacting to Gov. Rauner’s budget address:

Gov. Rauner’s proposed budget is one working and middle class people cannot afford. Behind every investment the Governor speaks of are dangerous cuts that harm all our citizens. While I applaud his promise to make good on pensions to current retirees, his plan to cut benefits for current and future generations public employees means the people who provide the most important services — teaching our children, keeping our streets safe, providing emergency health services and rushing into burning buildings — face a retirement of poverty and uncertainty.

The Governor also failed to mention the hundreds of millions in cuts to higher education, as well as cuts in services that harm foster children, the homeless, and developmentally and mentally disabled. His blatant attack on unions endangers workers statewide and certainly is not the type of labor policy for which Chicago has stood.

These irresponsible and reckless spending cuts and erosion of workers’ rights, of course, are against a backdrop of continued loopholes and giveaways that allow large corporations and the wealthy to escape their fair share of taxes. I’d strongly suggest the Governor ask his $30,000 a month budget adviser to consider closing tax loopholes and asking the wealthy to pay their fair share rather than balancing the budget on the backs of working class families.
