Sierra Club Statement On The Conclusion of COP20 Negotiations

LIMA, PERU –(ENEWSPF)–December 14, 2014.  Today marked the conclusion of the annual climate negotiations for the  United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). This year, the Sierra Club and the Sierra Student Coalition engaged in the COP20 negotiations in Lima — talks that were designed to set the stage for the highly-anticipated COP21 in Paris, France next year.

In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune released the following statement:

“The talks in Lima were spurred onward by the landmark deal between the U.S. and China to slash carbon pollution and grow the clean energy economy. Their conclusion marks another step forward on the path to a significant agreement in Paris, though there is much more left to be done.

“To do its share globally over the next year, the U.S. needs to follow through on its commitment to the Green Climate Fund, support a Clean Power Plan that is as strong as possible, and embrace the dropping prices and soaring demand in the clean energy market. The window to decisively act on the climate crisis is closing, which is why setting the stage for a strong deal in Paris is so important. The entrepreneurs and workers in the global clean energy economy aren’t waiting around, as they’re already demonstrating the opportunity that comes by fulfilling our obligation to act.

“From the 400,000 who took to the New York streets in September demanding climate action to the U.S. youth in Lima speaking out for clean energy to the polls that show large majorities of Americans support climate action, it’s clear where the public and the market are on climate. Paris is the place for the world’s leaders to catch up.”
