Statement by Dian Palmer, RN on Affordable Care Act Enrollment Figures

7.3 Million Ways the Affordable Care Act is Working

Washington, DC –(ENEWSPF)–September 18, 2014.  SEIU Nurse Alliance Chair Dian Palmer, RN released this statement today in response to the figures shared by CMS’s Marilyn Tavenner showing that 7.3 million Americans had purchased new healthcare plans through the insurance marketplace. The number represents a single sampling of enrollment data as of August 15, 2014:

“As nurses, we want to underscore what today’s news means: 7.3 million Americans who without the healthcare law would have been faced with skyrocketing premiums or episodic emergency room care, now have a healthcare plan of their choice and access to the kind of basic, preventive health care that can save lives, reduce the likelihood of medical bankruptcy and put hardworking families on the path to greater health.

“Our goal as nurses is to ensure that everyone, no matter who they are or where they work, has access to secure, affordable healthcare. Today makes official what many SEIU nurses, doctors and our allies witnessed in leading outreach efforts within our communities — the lower-cost healthcare options the law is delivering is a vital lifeline for millions of hardworking women and men and is providing coverage when they need it at a price they can afford.

“Above all, we want to let our patients and communities know that the law is working, in spite of the fact that extremist Republicans continue to vote to try repeal it and have yet to propose a plan to improve or strengthen our healthcare system. 7.3 million Americans can’t be wrong.”
