Washington, DC–(ENEWSPF)–March 20, 2013. The following is a statement released today the Brady Campaign on the signing of gun violence legislation by Colorado Governor Hickenlooper and the shooting death last night of Colorado Executive Director of the Department of Corrections, Tom Clements. The statement is attributed to Sandy Phillips who lost her daughter Jessica Ghawi in the Aurora shooting. Sandy was invited by the Governor to attend today’s bill signing ceremony, which is also the eight-month anniversary of the Aurora shooting:
“We are honored to attend the signing of the new gun bills being signed into law but our hearts are also filled with sadness for the family of Tom Clements. Having lost our daughter, Jessica Redfield Ghawi, in the Aurora Cinemark Theater, we know the extreme pain of losing a loved one to gun violence and it happens 32 times a day in our country.
Colorado has taken the first steps in leading other western states and the rest of the nation, to embrace change in our gun culture without infringing on our 2nd Amendment rights. We urge all leaders at the state and federal level to join us in embracing these changes that will save lives and enable our citizens to live freely without fear of gun violence. We ask the citizens of the country to take action for change that will make our homes, streets, theaters, churches, schools, restaurants, malls and shopping centers safe again.
We thank Governor Hickenlooper and State Representative Rhonda Fields for taking a courageous stand and supporting change for our nation.”
