Democracy Now! on Hurricane Sandy, FEMA, Global Warming, Senata Workers and USW’s Leo Gerard

PENNSYLVANIA–(ENEWSPF)–October 31, 2012.  Democracy Now! host Amy Goodman, broadcasting from Pacifica, discusses the wrath and devastation left by Hurricane Sandy, global warming, Mitt Romney’s call to cut funding to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and finally a return to Freeport, Ill. to talk with workers being displaced by Romney’s Bain Capital and United Steelworker (USW) International President Leo W. Gerard.

One of the largest hurricanes to ever hit the east coast of America has left 55 dead and 8 million people without power. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said that extreme weather has become our new reality. President Obama has suspended his election appearances to deal with the disaster while Mitt Romney continues to campaign in battleground states.

Romney has yet to respond to repeated questions about his campaign proposal to stop federal funding to the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Former head of FEMA Michael Brown criticized the President for responding too quickly to Sandy.

Goodman welcomed Brenda Ekwurzel, assistant director of climate research and analysis at the Union of Concerned Scientists, to discuss the storm and the significance of climate change.

The program then turned to the workers that are being displaced by a Bain Capital company, Sensata, and how an owner and founder of the company Mitt Romney will not respond to any requests to meet with the men and women whose jobs are being outsourced to China.

Goodman talked with a group of these workers about their concerns, their fears and frustrations. She then talked with Leo Gerard who praised the workers for their valiant effort to save their jobs, for bringing the issue of outsourcing American jobs to the forefront and exposing the hypocrisy of Mitt Romney and his campaign.
