Silver Spring, Maryland–(ENEWSPF)–June 8, 2016. Taylors Candy, Inc. of Alsip, IL under advice from its supplier is recalling Stuckey’s bags of Sunflower Kernels because they have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
The recalled “Stuckey’s Sunflower Kernels” were distributed to retail stores located in the states of : AL, AR, FL, GA, IL, IN, KY, LA, MO, MS, NC, SC, TN, TX, and VA.
The product comes in a 5.5 ounce, peg bag package marked with a code date of 1 1036 stamped on the front of the bag. No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this problem.
This is part of an expanded recall for Sunflower Kernels processed by SunOpta Corp. where potential for contamination was noted after routine testing revealed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in the facility that processes the bulk kernels.
Consumers who have purchased 5.5 ounce packages of “Stuckey’s” Sunflower Kernels are urged not to consume and either return them to the place of purchase or discard them.
