Governors State University President Elaine P. Maimon Elected to Board of Directors of the American Council on Education

UNIVERSITY PARK–(ENEWSPF)–March 18, 2016.  Elaine P. Maimon, President of Governors State University, has been elected to the Board of Directors of the American Council on Education (ACE), the major coordinating body for the nation’s colleges and universities.

Maimon was elected to the Board during ACE’s 98th Annual Meeting in San Francisco and will serve a three-year term.

“I am honored to be elected to the Board of Directors of ACE, an organization that represents all sectors of higher education. I look forward to working with President Molly Corbett Broad and with fellow Board members to make the case for the importance of colleges and universities to our national agenda.”

As the fifth president of Governors State University (GSU), Maimon has led the transformation of her university from an upper-division institution to a full-service, comprehensive university with a four-year undergraduate program reflecting the best research on general education; a residence facility designed as a living/learning community with full-time faculty members in residence; an increased number of international students; an emerging athletic program; and enrollment growth in double digits. The university has also launched its first five doctoral programs during her tenure.

In 2015, GSU won the 2015 ACE/Fidelity Investments Award for Institutional Transformation and Maimon was awarded the ACE Donna Shavlik Award for Women’s Leadership in Higher Education in 2014.

Led by Maimon, GSU’s transformation has strengthened its commitment to students of all ages and backgrounds, and the university continues to provide top service to working adults.

Maimon came to GSU with considerable administrative and faculty experience, after serving as Chancellor of the University of Alaska Anchorage and as a Vice President of Arizona State University, where she led the West Campus.

An expert in the teaching of writing and a founder of Writing Across the Curriculum, Maimon has published many books, including A Writer’s Resource (5th edition). Time Magazine recently named her book, The McGraw-Hill Handbook, one of the most-read books written by a woman on college campuses.

Maimon has served on the boards of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU), the American Association of Colleges and Universities (AAC&U), and the National Association of Teachers of English. She is also a member of The Chicago Network, a group of outstanding women leaders in Chicago’s business, cultural, non-profit, and educational communities.
