Prairie State College Offering Free GED® and Spanish GED® Preparation and ESL Classes in Fall Semester


CHICAGO HEIGHTS–(ENEWSPF)–July 30, 2015.  The Adult Education Program at Prairie State College (PSC) is offering free English as a Second Language (ESL), General Education (GED®) and Spanish GED Preparation, beginning Monday, Aug. 31, at the PSC Adult Training and Outreach Center (ATOC), located on the main campus at 202 S. Halsted St. in Chicago Heights.

Registration dates for GED classes are at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 3 and Tuesday, Aug. 4, or 5 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 10 and Tuesday, Aug. 11.

Registration dates for ESL/Spanish GED classes are at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 3 and Tuesday, Aug. 4, or 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 10 and Tuesday, Aug. 11.

Registration is required for all programs. No appointment is necessary, although participants are encouraged to arrive early as space is limited. No children are allowed during registration. Participants also need to bring an official government-issued photo ID and proof of public assistance, if applicable. Students who are 16 or 17 years old must provide documentation proving formal withdrawal from high school.

The ESL program is designed to help people make the transition from different countries and cultures to American society. The purpose of the program is to teach skills in speaking, reading, writing, and listening to those whose native language is not English. Classes are offered from beginning to advanced levels, and are available days and evenings. To find out more about registration dates and how to enroll, call (708) 709-3790.

GED classes offer students an opportunity to complete high school studies and receive an equivalency certificate. According to the Stevens Amendment Act, the grant-funded portion of Adult Education and the Family Literacy Program at Prairie State College for Fiscal Year 2015 is 33 percent financed with federal funds totaling $181,724.
