Governors State University’s Partnership with IU CIBER Continues Through 2018

University Park, IL—(ENEWSPF)—January 28, 2015. Governors State University’s College of Business and Public Administration (CPBA) has announced that its partnership with Indiana University’s Center for International Business Education and Research (IU CIBER) has reached a new level and will continue into 2018.

“What’s more exciting for Governors State is CBPA is one of five partners that IU CIBER will work with for the next four years to expand their reach to underserved students at community colleges and universities,” said Governors State’s Dr. Ellen Foster Curtis, CBPA Dean and Professor of Management.

Foster Curtis said this year Governors State will take more of a leadership role in assisting community colleges in the Chicago area to globalize their curriculums and bolster faculty and student international engagement.

IU CIBER was one of only 17 CIBERs (down from 33 in the 2010-2014 cycle) in the country to receive funding from the Department of Education for the 2014-2018 grant period. For the first year of the grant cycle (2014-2015), CBPA will receive $27,520 from IU CIBER to offer three programs:

• Two “Doing Business in and with Latin America” workshops for small and medium sized businesses in the region. The first workshop is scheduled for March 27, 2015. Another workshop is planned for August or early September of 2015.

• Summer 2015 “Faculty Development in International Business” workshops offered to faculty in community colleges in the region. “We will be working with GSU’s School of Extended Learning to offer this professional development program,” Foster Curtis said.

• Summer 2015 study trip to Brazil. This 12-day trip will feature visits to universities and companies in Rio de Janiero and Sao Paolo, as well as tourism site visits and cultural activities. Students can earn three credit hours by enrolling in a special topics course associated with this trip, which is open to all GSU students, faculty and staff, as well as students in GSU’s Dual Degree Program partner schools.

Since first partnering with IU Ciber in 2010, CPBA has engaged in various activities to internationalize its curriculum, faculty and students, including 15 CBPA faculty members participating in global business summer faculty development seminars at the University of Memphis CIBER. In addition, six faculty members participated in international development trips to India, Turkey, Brazil, China, South Africa and the Scandinavian countries between 2010 and 2014. “CBPA faculty gained tremendous knowledge and skills from these programs, and incorporated what they learned in their classroom teaching and research,” Foster Curtis said.

CIBER also provided financial support for Governors State students to study abroad during the summer, in China in 2012 and Poland in 2014. In spring 2014, four MBA/MSA students from Governors State participated in the “Engaging MBA Students” program, offered by Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business and supported by a grant from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

“Governors State students worked with MBA students from the IU Kelley School and the University of West Indies’ Cave School of Business on project teams providing business consulting services to Barbados businesses in manufacturing, tourism and other service sectors,” Foster Curtis said.
