Governors State University President to Join President Obama at White House College Opportunity Summit

Higher Education, Business and Non-Profit Leaders Focus on Completion of Bachelor’s Degrees

UNIVERSITY PARK, IL –(ENEWSPF)—December 2, 2014. On Thursday, December 4th, Governors State University President Elaine P. Maimon will join President Obama, the First Lady and Vice President Biden at the White House College Opportunity Summit. The Summit will bring together colleges and universities, business leaders, nonprofits and others that are committed to supporting more college opportunities for students across the country.

This year’s summit will focus on building sustainable collaborations in communities with strong K-12 and higher education partnerships to encourage college going, and supporting colleges to work together to dramatically improve persistence and increase college completion, especially for first generation, low-income, and underrepresented students.

“I am honored to represent Governors State and the Chicagoland Alliance for Degree Completion at the White House College Opportunity Summit. Joining me at the Summit are presidents from two of our partner community colleges:  Dr. Sylvia Jenkins of Moraine Valley Community College and Dr. Terri Winfree of Prairie State College,” said President Maimon.

The Dual Degree Program, GSU’s collaboration with 17 Chicago-area community colleges, is a national model for university/community college cooperation.  Low-income, first generation, and underrepresented DDP students study full-time to complete associate degrees in the community colleges and then move seamlessly to efficient completion of university bachelor’s degrees.

“The White House Summit also recognizes GSU’s highly structured four-year program to achieve the baccalaureate degree,” Maimon added.

Governors State University was founded in 1969 as an upper division university. Today, as a four-year university, more than 5,500 undergraduate and graduate students choose from 64 degree and 24 certificate programs that prepare them for success in business, industry, healthcare, the arts and education. GSU is a public university located 40 miles south of Chicago in University Park, IL offering the most affordable undergraduate tuition in the state. GSU is committed to embracing diversity and academic excellence.
