Governors State University ROCKS THE VOTE

GSU joins national drive to register student voters

University Park, IL—(ENEWSPF)—September 30, 2014. In celebration of National Voter Registration Day, members of the Governors State Student Senate join with student leaders at 100 colleges and universities across the country to register voters. Each member of the GSU Student Senate is now a deputy registrar and will help voters across the campus register to vote, update their registration or receive an absentee ballot.

“The GSU ROCKS THE VOTE initiative is an important part of commitment to civic engagement at GSU,” said Dr. Aurélio Manuel Valente, Interim Vice President of Student Affairs and Dean of Students. “This is a critical part of our responsibilities as citizens,” he added.

GSU is using TurboVote, a product of Democracy Works, to make it easy for students to register. When students sign up with TurboVote, the system keeps track of all their elections—local, state and national. If students wish to register, update their addresses or request absentee ballots, TurboVote sends them the necessary forms and information with pre-addressed, pre-stamped envelopes, and then sends reminders to ensure that users never miss another election.

In addition to the online registration service, in person voter registration is also offered at the university at the following times and locations October 1,  2 to 6 p.m., room A2122; and October 2, noon to 6  p.m., Hall of Governors.

Governors State University, the only public university in the Chicago Southland region, serves students in undergraduate, master’s, doctoral and certificate programs. In August 2014, GSU became a fully accredited four-year university, admitting its first freshman class and introducing apartment and suite-style student housing.

Governors State University is located at I University Parkway, University Park, Illinois.
