CHICAGO HEIGHTS–(ENEWSPF)–August 25, 2014.  A selection of works from Prairie State College (PSC) Photographer of the Year honoree Carole Rose will be on display through Thursday, Sept. 18, in the Christopher Art Gallery on the college’s main campus, located at 202 S. Halsted St. in Chicago Heights.

An artists’ reception is scheduled from noon to 2 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 28, in the gallery.

The Photographer of the Year award is given annually to an outstanding PSC photography student. In addition to being the featured artist in the student show, Rose also will receive a $1,500 scholarship.

Rose is an active member of the college’s Photo Society, and is currently serving as vice president. The club sponsors the Photographer of the Year scholarship award.

Rose grew up in the Chicago neighborhood of Beverly Hills. She earned a degree in restaurant and hotel cookery from Madison Area Technical College in Wisconsin. After working as a professional cook in many settings for seventeen years, Rose joined the United States Navy and served as a Culinary Specialist for twenty years, before returning to PSC to study photography.

“While in the US Navy and traveling throughout Europe, I saw so many fabulous images which I did not have the skill or equipment to capture,” she said. “When I inherited a digital SLR camera from my brother-in-law, I decided to use my Post 9/11 GI Bill monies to study photography. I have learned a wide range of technical photography and aesthetic skills at the college from many excellent teachers.”

After her graduation from PSC next year, Rose plans to take her new photography skills back to Europe and beyond.

“I plan to create images that show my awe of the beauty and history I experience,” Rose said. “Of course I want to see new lands and create new images of the as yet unknown.”

Additional PSC students who will have their work highlighted during the show include Demarkus Nelson, Dominique Tolbert and Raymond Thompson of Park Forest; Robert Walker, William Billingsly and Diante Mitchell of Matteson; Daniel Lagor, Melinda Arce-Gudino, Asha Brumfield, Luke Rhodes and Ian Brockman of Homewood; Jamie Jenkins and Carol Bruns of Beecher; Syd Sanchez and Amy Roesch of Chicago Heights; Carly Harnisch of Chicago; and Robert Villarreal of Flossmoor.

The Christopher Art Gallery is open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday. The gallery will be closed on Labor Day, Sept. 1. Visits also can be made by appointment. For more information about the exhibit or to make an appointment for a visit, call (708) 709-3636.
