January 20 event on Lincoln Park Campus brings together community
WBEZ reporter Natalie Moore is the keynote speaker for the 17th annual Martin Luther King Jr. day prayer breakfast at DePaul University on Jan. 20.
CHICAGO—(ENEWSPF)—January 13, 2014. Journalist and author Natalie Moore will be the keynote speaker at the Martin Luther King Jr. Day annual prayer breakfast at DePaul University. This annual event, now in its 17th year, will be held Jan. 20 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Student Center, 2250 N. Sheffield Ave., room 120, on the Lincoln Park Campus. It is presented by DePaul’s Center for Intercultural Programs to bring the community together to commemorate King’s life and work for social justice and civil rights.
Moore, a South Side reporter for WBEZ radio, has had her work featured in the Chicago Sun-Times, Essence, Black Enterprise and Chicago Tribune. She is the co-author with Natalie Hopkinson of “Deconstructing Tyrone: A New Look at Black Masculinity in the Hip-Hop Generation” and with Lance Williams of “The Almighty Black P Stone Nation: The Rise, Fall and Resurgence of an American Gang.”
The breakfast also will include student performances by The Theatre School, Presenters of Enlightenment Through Spoken-word (P. O.E.T.S.) and the gospel choir. In addition, a speech will be given by the winner of the second annual Martin Luther King Jr. prayer breakfast speech contest.

The annual event marks the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Standish E. Willis, Chicago criminal defense and civil rights attorney, will deliver the keynote address. The event is sponsored by the College of Law Diversity Committee.

Answering King’s Call for “Creative Maladjustment”
Rob Watts, professor of social welfare and psychology at Hunter College and CUNY, and a national leader in racially conscious youth development, will discuss using King’s concept of creative maladjustment to address the daily injustices many youth face. The event is sponsored by the Committee on Research Excellence (CORE) of the Clinical Psychology Program, Psychology Department.
