University Park, IL-(ENEWSPF)- The Walgreen’s family of Healthcare Clinics (formerly known as Take Care Clinics) has announced its intention to invest in the lifelong future of Family Nurse Practitioners’ education by providing scholarships for FNP students across the country.  Walgreen’s will provide a $7,000 scholarship to a Family Nurse Practitioner in his/her last year of study at GSU. In total, the company has set aside $250,000 in scholarships for FNP students across the country.

According to Cathy Moynihan, DNP, FNP-BC, CDE, Market Manager for Walgreen’s Healthcare Clinic/Chicago South, the Family Nurse Practitioner is “the heart and soul of our Nurse Practitioner-based company, a healthcare model committed to promoting patient-centered communication and care. We’re expanding our scope of practice, and opening up a pipeline through which we intend to hire the best and the brightest FNPs from area universities.”

Moynihan, herself, is a May 2013 graduate of Governors State University, where she received her Doctor of Nursing Practice degree from the College of Health and Human Services. Characterizing her nursing education at GSU as “outstanding,” Moynihan cites, in particular, Nursing Department Chair Nancy MacMullen who provided excellent support to ensure her success in the program.

According to Moynihan, the Walgreen’s Healthcare Clinics have a strong network support for new employees and specifically have a “new grad program” in place where employees are supervised and nurtured by certified preceptors. Ongoing clinical satisfaction and progress is assessed using clinical quality measures such as Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS), evidence based guidelines, monthly peer reviews and ongoing collaborating physician reviews.

“There is a tremendous future in retail healthcare and the Walgreen’s family wants to ensure that future FNPs will consider a career with us,” Moynihan said. “With the help of our clinical affiliates, our goal is to provide a well-coordinated system of more affordable and accessible patient care – with the bottom line goal of improved overall patient outcomes,” Moynihan said.

Governors State University is located at 1 University Parkway, University Park, Illinois.
