Endowment Scholarship Fund now surpasses $2M
Chicago Heights, IL–(ENEWSPF)– With one of the most perfect days of the summer as the backdrop, the 21st Annual Marian Catholic Endowment Golf Classic held on August 16 at Flossmoor and Idlewild Country Clubs, surpassed last year’s proceeds by over $15,000. The 26 member committee, made up of alumni, parents, and friends of Marian Catholic, have been engaged since early spring to promote and populate the event.
“Even with the economy struggling to make its way back, our repeat golfers and sponsors, as well as our first-time golfers, guests and sponsors clearly understand the importance of the Endowment Classic,” said longtime event Co-Chair Greg Underwood. “I am happy to share that this year’s Endowment Classic exceeded our initial announcement, giving us a closing total of $100,000 for student scholarships.”
Established in 1989, the Marian Catholic Golf Classic has focused on building a future of scholarships through endowment. By investing the proceeds from the Endowment Golf Classic and holding them in perpetuity, the interest generated from the principal has supported qualified students who otherwise could not afford to attend Marian Catholic High School.
Bolstered by news from Sister Judine Hilbing, O.P., President, that through solid investment, the Endowment Fund has topped $2 million, the committee, volunteers and staff, as well as the golfers and guests were thrilled to learn that more student scholarships will be available this year.
“Thanks to the Marian Catholic Endowment Golf Classic, many students were granted scholarships to continue or complete their high school education,” stated event Co-Chair Mark Peifer ’81. “Last year’s needs were unprecedented, and thanks to the success of this event, many deserving students were served.”
An Endowment Scholarship recipient, one of many students featured at scholar kiosks during the event, enthusiastically shared his plans for the future.
“I plan to come back and play in the golf outing every chance I get,” he said. “Receiving an Endowment Scholarship has helped me continue my high school education at Marian, and I want to be able to help those who will come after me. It’s the very least I can do,” said the senior, who is a member of the band, school newspaper staff, and yearbook staff.
Consistently viewed as one of the Southland’s most appealing outings by new and long-term golfers, the Endowment Golf Classic’s success is driven by a legacy of commitment from sponsors and golfers alike.
“This is one event where an initial investment nets an almost immediate payoff for sponsors, both large and small,” said Mary Moffatt, Marian’s Vice President for Advancement. “Aside from our sincere thanks and recognition of the sponsors in our program, our Annual Report, and on our website, there are a number of students receiving a quality education right now who otherwise might not be Marian Catholic Spartans.”
Marian’s strength in Catholic education follows the Dominican model of pooled resources, loving sacrifice and solid stewardship.
