Requests Next U.S. Navy Frigate to be USS Quincy to Honor Community’s Support for Navy and Navy Reserve
WASHINGTON –-(ENEWSPF)–June 23, 2015. U.S. Senator Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) today announced he has requested the U.S. Navy name its next frigate the USS Quincy to honor the town of Quincy, Illinois.
“By naming a U.S. Frigate after Quincy, Illinois, the Navy would be honoring the service and support the community gives on behalf of the Navy and Navy Reserve,” Senator Kirk wrote in a letter to Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus.
“This honor by the U.S. Navy, should it be bestowed, would be especially significant now because Quincy is celebrating its 175th anniversary as a city in 2015, and the military has played an important role in our history going back to the Civil War,” said Tom Oakley, former President and CEO of Quincy Newspapers.
This year marks the 175th anniversary of Quincy’s incorporation and the 190th anniversary of the inauguration of President John Quincy Adams, for whom the town was named. Quincy was home to a Navy Reserve Training Center from the late 1940s until it was destroyed in the 1973 floods.

Dear Secretary Mabus:
I am writing you to request that you name the next U.S. Navy Frigate the USS QUINCY in honor of the community of Quincy, Illinois and all American communities bearing the proud name of Quincy.
This year marks the 190th Anniversary of John Quincy Adams’ inauguration as the 6th President of the United States and the 175th anniversary of Quincy, Illinois in Adams County.
The Navy currently does not have a USS QUINCY in the inventory. All three previous USS QUINCY vessels did not honor Quincy, Illinois but Quincy, Massachusetts. By naming a U.S. Frigate after Quincy, Illinois, the Navy would be honoring the service and support the community gives on behalf of the Navy and Navy Reserve.
