Senator Merkley Applauds Committee Passage of Employment Non-Discrimination Act

Momentum for equality builds with bipartisan vote to ban LGBT discrimination in the workplace

Washington, DC–(ENEWSPF)–July 10, 2013.  Oregon’s Senator Jeff Merkley issued the following statement after his bill to end employment discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender Americans, the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, was passed out of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee on a bipartisan vote.

“All Americans deserve the right to work hard and earn a living. It is fundamentally inconsistent with our American values that in 29 states you can still be fired for who you are and whom you love.  I’m grateful to Chairman Harkin, Senator Kirk, Senator Collins and Senator Baldwin for their leadership and to my colleagues on both sides of the aisle for their commitment to equality.  I look forward to working with Leader Reid and the rest of my colleagues to get this bill on the floor and passed through the Senate.”
