27 Dead After Assault in Connecticut Elementary School

CONNECTICUT—(ENEWSPF)—December 14, 2012 – UPDATE 3:20 PM (CST)

Twenty-seven people were killed, including 20 children, when a gunman opened fire at Sandy Hook Elementary School Friday morning.

NBC News has identified the gunman as Ryan Lanza, a teacher’s son, from Hoboken, New Jersey.  However, Paul Vance of the Connecticut State Police said that positive identification of the gunman has still to be made.

The gunman who was clad in black and carried two 9 mm handguns rampaged through the Connecticut elementary school Friday morning.

Eighteen children were pronounced dead at the school.  Two other children later died at a local hospital of wounds sustained during the shooting.

One of the adults killed at the scene was reportedly the mother of the gunman who was a kindergarten teacher at the school.  It was in her classroom where most of the casualties were found.

President Obama was notified about the shooting and continues to receive updates, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said.

“I think it’s important on a day like today to view this as I know the president, as a father does, and I as a father and others who are parents certainly do,” Carney said at his daily briefing. “Which is to feel enormous sympathy for families that are affected.”
