Following Ruling to Evict Occupy Pittsburgh from the People’s Park

PITTSBURGH—(ENEWSPF)—February 3, 2012.  Today Judge Christine A. Ward of the Court of Common Pleas of Allegheny County ruled on BNY Mellon’s motion for preliminary injunction against Occupy Pittsburgh, clearing the way for the bank to evict Occupy Pittsburgh from the People’s Park.

Occupy Pittsburgh has been encamped in the People’s Park, a public green space over which BNY Mellon asserts ownership, since October 15, 2011. Pittsburgh’s is the only Occupation to have successfully reclaimed land from a bank.

On December 9, BNY Mellon filed a lawsuit against Occupy Pittsburgh and “unidentified individuals” alleging that the members of Occupy Pittsburgh and their encampment were trespassing, and that the camp posed a danger. The bank demanded that Occupy Pittsburgh remove all tents, structures and equipment and abandon the People’s Park.

Whatever the outcome of BNY Mellon’s attempt to evict Occupy Pittsburgh, the movement will continue. “You cannot evict an idea whose time has come.”
