Washington D.C. –-(ENEWSPF)–September 29, 2015. Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky released the following statement in response to House Republican’s announcement of the creation of a select committee to investigate Planned Parenthood.
“It is beyond comprehension that House Republicans are choosing to further waste time and resources on this witch hunt. To date, three standing Congressional committees have launched investigations in Planned Parenthood, none of which has discovered even a shred of evidence that Planned Parenthood has broken any laws. Planned Parenthood has been a trusted provider of health services to both men and women for ninety-nine years. One in five American women has turned to Planned Parenthood for medical care. Moreover, Planned Parenthood disproportionately serves low-income patients, most of whom would no longer have access to reproductive health services if Planned Parenthood was removed from Medicaid.
In contrast, there is mounting evidence that the Center for Medical Progress broke state and federal laws, and yet, Republicans refuse to include any of this evidence in any of their ongoing investigations. If Republicans were truly interesting in getting answers, they would be conducting balanced investigations that require the Center for Medical Progress to answer outstanding questions about potentially illegal activities. On the other hand, Planned Parenthood has provided extensive documentation of their practices and made themselves available for interviews.
But we have seen this before. Currently, the Select Committee on Benghazi has held three hearings over the course of sixteen months and has wasted more than $4 million in taxpayer dollars. While Republicans embark on a new witch hunt, there are countless issues that impact millions of Americans every day that they refuse to address, including skyrocketing drug prices, high tuition costs and retirement security. If Republicans were serious about improving access to health services, these are the issues we ought to be investigating.”
