Rep. Jan Schakowsky Statement on the 100th Anniversary of the Armenian Genocide

WASHINGTON, D.C. –(ENEWSPF)–April 24, 2015. Today marks the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide.  Rep. Jan Schakowsky issued the following statement on this horrific event:

“April 24, 1915 marked the beginning of the Armenian Genocide.  By 1923, more than 1.5 million lives were lost at the hands of the Ottoman Empire.  A century later, we remember and honor the lives of those who were lost.

I believe we must acknowledge this crime for what it was: a genocide.  That’s why I am a cosponsor of H.R.154, the Armenian Genocide Truth and Justice Resolution.  This House Resolution calls on President Obama to work toward equitable, constructive, and durable Armenian-Turkish relations based upon the Republic of Turkey’s full acknowledgement of the facts and ongoing consequences of the Armenian Genocide, as well as a fair, just, and comprehensive international resolution of this crime against humanity.  As a global community, we must pledge to keep these types of horrors from ever occurring again, and legislation like this helps us do so.

It is critical that we remember and honor the Armenians who were senselessly killed.  Each of us has a responsibility to reject hatred and to speak up when innocent lives are being lost.  On this centennial, and whenever atrocities occur in the future, we must speak out and stand up together in the name of peace.  It is the only way we can ensure that the world continues to become a better place for our children and our children’s children.”
