Park Forest, IL–(ENEWSPF)–March 29, 2015.  The Park Forest Board of Trustees adopted a resolution on March 23rd, on a recommendation from the Park Forest Environment Commission, to officially name the Central Park observation deck in honor of former Recreation and Parks Director John Joyce.

The deck will officially be called the John Joyce Observation Deck at the Central Park Wetlands.

“We feel this to be an appropriate acknowledgement of a job well done,” said Park Forest Environment Commission members in a March 16 letter to Village officials.

The wooden observation deck, which sits at the center of Park Forest’s Central Park Wetlands, was originally constructed in 2004 to allow park-goers a bird’s-eye view of the bountiful native plants at the site. A fire destroyed the observation deck in 2012, but through the efforts of a group of residents committed to seeing the deck restored, dollars were quickly raised to fund a new construction project.

Joyce oversaw work to restore the Central Park Observation Deck just prior to his retirement in 2013. He served Park Forest as Recreation and Parks Director for close to 40 years.
