Lawndale Christian Health Center Mourns the Loss of Dr. Jerry Umanos

CHICAGO–(ENEWSPF)–April 24, 2014.  Lawndale Christian Health Center is grieved to announce the death of Dr. Jerry Umanos. Early this morning, we learned from Dr. Umanos’ associates in Kabul the news that he was killed in Afghanistan. In a press conference outside of the Lawndale Christian Health Center building at 3860 W. Ogden Avenue, the following information was shared.

Today, the staff and patients of Lawndale Christian Health Center lost a very dear friend, devoted colleague, and gifted doctor. Dr. Jerry Umanos has been a pediatrician at Lawndale Christian Health Center for 25 years and he was, for many of us on staff, the pediatrician for our very own children. For nearly a decade, he has volunteered in Afghanistan to train medical residents and to see pediatric patients. This loss is a loss for his family and those he worked with, as well as for the people of Afghanistan. He was a loving, caring physician who served all his patients with respect.

At this time, we are trying to help our staff to mourn this great loss and are not doing interviews. We respectfully request that you give the staff and patients of Lawndale Christian Health Center and the Umanos family the space to grieve.

The health center will continue to be in operation and serve our community. Our clinic is grieving right now, and our hearts are broken.  We ask for your prayers as we navigate this difficult time.

Lawndale Christian Health Center (LCHC) is a community-based nonprofit organization, founded in 1984 and dedicated to improving the health of Lawndale and the neighboring communities on Chicago’s West Side.
