The Park Forest Rotary Club has been collecting winter coats, hats and gloves in good condition to provide to homeless veterans from the Chicagoland area during the annual Stand Down Day. Donations can be dropped off at the Park Forest Village Manager’s Office, located on the 2nd floor of Village Hall, 350 Victory Drive, or Tower Cleaners, 230 Forest Boulevard in DownTown Park Forest. Eighth Annual Veterans Day Program – Friday, November 9

The Village of Park Forest will hold its eighth annual Veterans Day Program on Friday, November 9 at 7 p.m. at Freedom Hall, 410 Lakewood Boulevard. This year, the program which recognizes those who have served or are currently serving in the armed forces will also feature the unveiling of the latest Park Forest mural. Local artist Glenn Davies will introduce his painting – erected on an interior wall of Freedom Hall – honoring the service of two veterans and current residents, Ed Fizer and John Ryan. The evening will also feature the music of Nancy Hays, who has performed for the likes of President Obama, Senator John Kerry and Colin Powell, as she performs her “I Love America” program. Additionally, military vehicles are set to be on display in the parking lot of Freedom Hall. The event is free and open to the public.

Marine Corps Veteran Ed Fizer to Speak at Veterans Day Program on November 11

Edwin Fizer, an honored veteran of the Montford Point Marines, the African American unit that broke the color barrier in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II, will speak on the challenges and accomplishments of his unit for the Park Forest Historical Society program on Sunday, November 11 at 2:30 p.m. at Park Forest Village Hall, 350 Victory Drive. Park Forest Senior Citizen’s Advisory Commission Looking for Volunteers

The Park Forest Senior Citizen’s Advisory Commission is comprised of nine members, all of whom must be residents of Park Forest. Park Forest residents interested in serving on the Senior Citizen’s Advisory Commission may complete an application with the Village Hall, 350 Victory Drive. Rialto Theatre’s Festival of Trees and Lunch – Registration Deadline Tuesday, November 6

On Wednesday, November 21, we will depart from Park Forest Village Hall, 350 Victory Drive, for a visit to the Rialto Theatre’s Festival of Trees. The Rialto Square Theatre in Joliet is transformed with the most beautifully decorated holiday trees you will see in one place. We will enjoy the variety and array of trees before we are entertained with a live organ concert in the historical theatre.  Following the festival we will travel to Merichka’s Restaurant, another historical landmark in Joliet, where we will enjoy lunch. Your choices will be 1/2 fried chicken, famous poor boy, baked fish, jumbo shrimp or a yodel burger (with Swiss cheese on French bread).  All meals include salad, choice of potato and dessert and coffee, tea or soda (please mention meal choice when registering). December Senior Trip – ‘Singin’ in the Rain’ at Drury Lane – Registration Deadline Monday, November 19

On Thursday, December 6, the bus will depart from Park Forest Village Hall at 10:15 a.m. for Drury Lane in Oakbrook Terrace for lunch and the show ‘Singing’ in the Rain.’ Set in glitzy, glamorous Hollywood in the 1920s, ‘Singin’ in the Rain’ is based on the 1954 film starring Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds and Donald O’Connor. This lighthearted and funny play features exhilarating dance numbers, toe tapping score and an effervescent love story.  Named by the American Film Institute as the #1 Greatest Movie Musical of all time, this joyous show will leave you with a ‘glorious feeling’ wishing it would down pour so you can go singin’ and dancin’ in the rain.  A delightful sit down luncheon will be provided before the matinee performance.  Your lunch options are Roast Sirloin or Stuffed Chicken Breast.  A vegetarian option is also available.  Lunch also includes vegetables, potato, bread and dessert.  Please mention meal preference when registering. Through interviews and live performance footage, we explore the thoughts and lives of the musicians spearheading today s jazz front lines. Based in Park Forest since 1977 but drawing singers from the entire Chicago Southland, the Grande Prairie Singers are led by Artistic Director Jo Rodenburg, now in her third season with the chorus. The 2012-13 season includes three Sunday-afternoon concerts:

  • "On This Island: Music of the British Isles," March 3, 2013; and
  • "American Choral Music Today," May 19, 2013.

Park Forest Plaza Print for Sale

Annabelle Gould’s print of the Park Forest Plaza is available for sale at the Park Forest House Museum, 141 Forest Boulevard. The vibrant print is from an original watercolor, showing kids and their moms in the Park Forest Plaza, in front of the old Holiday Theatre and Golden Hanger Shop. The print can be purchased at the House Museum during normal hours of operation on Wednesdays and Saturdays or through the Society’s online store on their website at www.parkforesthistory.org. The 1950s Park Forest House Museum, 141 Forest Boulevard, is ready for Thanksgiving visitors. Vintage decorations will be on display through November 30. The museum is open Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. or for small groups by appointment. Donation is Adults- $5; 12 & under free with a paying adult. ’12 Angry Men’ – Tickets Now on Sale

Tickets are now on sale for the Drama Group’s production of ’12 Angry Men’ that will take place November 30 through December 9. On a hot summer day jurors are asked to deliberate on a case involving a young man accused of killing his father. An initial vote is taken, and there are 11 votes for guilty and one vote for not guilty. One man stands alone against the others’ preconceptions, bias and prejudice. ’12 Angry Men’ has been described as “a classic drama; a riveting study of courage, bias and the American legal system.” Tickets are $19 for adults, $18 for seniors and $15 for students with identification. ‘Winter Birds of Northern Illinois’ – Wednesday, November 7

TCAS monthly program will be held on Wednesday, November 7 at 7 pm. at the Park Forest Library, 400 Lakewood Boulevard. “Winter Birds of Northern Illinois” will be presented by Bob and Kathy Andrini. The Andrinis will give a pictorial presentation about many of the birds that are found I Northern Illinois during this time of year. This will include both permanent residents and winter visitors found in fields, streams and backyards. The Andrinis will also discuss adaptations birds have developed to withstand winter conditions. The event is free and open to the public.

TCAS Christmas Cards on Sale

Once again the TCAS will be offering original Christmas cards in a variety of designs. Samples of the cars will be on display and a few will be for sale at the TCAS programs on November 7 and December 6 at the Park Forest Library, 400 Lakewood Boulevard. Cards may be ordered at the programs or by calling Aura Duke at 708-748-6407. All cards are in bright Christmas colors and sell for $7 for a set of 12. Envelopes are included. Card sales help support TCAS grants and other environmental projects.

The Sauk-Calumet Group of the Illinois Sierra Club will hold its monthly meeting On Monday, November 12 at 7:15 p.m. at the Olympia Fields Village Hall, 20701 Governors Highway (go east on 207th Street from Governors Highway and look for the entrance on the left). Photographer Bob Moffitt will present this month’s program entitled “Star Trails Through the Night Sky” which will feature time lapse movies and photos of star trails through the moonlit night sky that were taken during numerous trips to Arches National Park and other southwest locations. “The Courage of Equality: Love, Work, Society” – Wednesday, November 7 — Registration Required

One of the nation’s leading social and artistic voices, Nikki Giovanni, will present “The Courage of Equality: Love, Work, Society” at GSU’s Center for Performing Arts on November 7 at 6 p.m. Immediately following the lecture, Giovanni will take questions from the audience. There will be a book signing after the presentation. Giovanni is a noted poet, writer commentator, activist, and educator.  Her work has been strongly influenced by issues related to social justice and civil rights. In addition to the presentation by Giovanni, the university is also hosting a book discussion of “Quilting the Black-Eyed Pea” by Nikki Giovanni at 3:30 p.m. on November 7 in Engbretson Hall. Members of the panel include Dr. Christopher White, Assistant Professor of English and Dr. Elizabeth Johnson, Assistant Professor of History. Dr. Rashidah Muhammad will serve as moderator. Dr. Muhammad will also lead students in a choral reading of the title poem. Individual students will read selected Giovanni poems. Refreshments will be served. Alternative Teacher Certification Information Session – Tuesday, November 13

On Tuesday, November 13 at 7 p.m. in GSU’s E-lounge, you can learn how to earn elementary or secondary (biology, chemistry, or mathematics) teacher certification and secure a teaching position through GSU’s Alternative Certification Program. This program offers a way to earn a teaching certificate and embark on a new, rewarding career in education. The Teacher Quality Partnership (TQP) leads to a Masters of Art in Teaching (MAT) in Urban Teacher Education in elementary or secondary (biology, chemistry, or mathematics). TQP provides an opportunity to co-teach for a year with a certified teacher, a $30,000 stipend and a 25 percent reduction in tuition. TQP is made possible by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education. This program is open to college graduates with a bachelor’s degree. GSU Offers Computer Networking Series

Computer Network training is now available at GSU this fall. The Computer Networking Series enables participants to gain career enhancing skills through non-credit courses. Students will receive training preparing them for certifications in Comptia’s A+ and Cisco’s Certified Network Administration. Courses may be taken individually or in sequence, depending on individual career and education goals. Course topics include Computer Hardware, Networking Fundamentals, Networking Switches and Routing, Wireless Networking, Windows Seven Operating System, and Windows Server Operating System. Job Search Assistance Every Tuesday at GSU

The Mobile Workforce Center’s mobile unit will be at GSU every Tuesday, from 9:30 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., parked near the university’s front entrance. Center services include resume development, access to online job boards and websites, instruction in how to conduct an online job search and improve keyboarding skills, and assistance of staff. The center is equipped with 11 computer stations with Internet access, printer, and copy machines, and is wheelchair accessible. Services are free and available to residents in all counties. Health Care Meeting – Wednesday, November 14

The League of Women Voters of the Park Forest Area will host an educational meeting on the topic of Health Care on Wednesday, November 14 at 7 p.m. at the Park Forest Public Library, 400 Lakewood Boulevard. Senator Toi Hutchinson, Illinois District 40, will speak about the state level action to implement the Affordable Care Act. She will talk about the state legislature’s interest and progress to date in implementing the provisions relating to the establishment of State Health Insurance Exchanges, which are to provide access to affordable health insurance to individuals, families and small businesses. She will also talk about the possibility of the expansion of Medicaid program as permitted in the Affordable Care Act, and the status of the current Illinois Medicaid program, and what changes have been made or are likely to be made due to the financial status of the state budget. Free Psychotherapy Available from GSU’s Psychology Program

GSU’s Psychology Department is offering free psychotherapy services to members of the community. Conversations with a psychotherapist can help people cope with depression, anxiety, relationship issues, stress, and life transition problems. Confidential, one-on-one sessions are held with a GSU graduate student in psychology under the supervision of a Licensed Clinical Psychologist. Each Wednesday through November 14, those 11 through adult can follow the forest’s fall changes, enjoy light exercise and experience nature firsthand on Thorn Creek’s autumn trails. The walk will take place from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. each week. Trails can be wet or muddy, so please wear sturdy shoes. The terrain is moderate. Registration is not required. Senior Citizen Weekday Lunch at the Senior Café

Senior citizens of all income levels are invited to lunch weekdays at the Community Nutrition Network (CNN) site located inside the Rich Township’s Shirley J. Green Senior Center. The CNN site is open to all south suburban residents, including those living outside of Rich Township. Participants must be 60 years of age or older. The suggested donation for lunch is $2.50. Winter Clothing Items Needed to Distribute to Homeless Veterans at November Stand Down Day – Donations Due by Monday, November 5

Stand Down Day is a time when homeless veterans from the Chicago land area will have access to comprehensive social and medical services that help to prepare them for the harsh winters of Chicago. The veterans will also be treated to a hot meal from Robinson’s Ribs. Rotary Clubs have joined together with the Hines and Jesse Brown Medical Centers, several Chicago area veterans groups and community organizations to collect coats, hats, and gloves for distribution to our veterans at this annual event. The organizing partners of Stand Down Day are expecting more than 850 veterans to attend this year’s event. The Park Forest Rotary Club will be collecting coats, hats and gloves in good condition to provide to the veterans. Donated items can be dropped off at:

  • Village Manager’s Office, 2nd floor of Park Forest Village Hall, 350 Victory Drive, or
  • Tower Cleaners, 230 Forest Boulevard, in DownTown Park Forest.

Park Forest Hall of Fame Nominations Being Accepted Through December 15

The Park Forest Historical Society will be accepting nominations for the Park Forest Hall of Fame until December 15, 2012. The official form, which must accompany the nomination, is available at the Park Forest Public Library, 400 Lakewood Boulevard, the 1950s Park Forest House Museum, 141 Forest Boulevard on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., the lobby of Park Forest Village Hall, 350 Victory Drive, the Archive Office, 227 Monee Road on Fridays from 10 a.m. to 12 noon, or on the Society’s website, www.parkforesthistory.org. Nominations may be mailed to the Historical Society or turned in at the Library in person. To be eligible for the Hall of Fame, persons nominated must have made substantial, beneficial and consistent contributions to the life and well-being of Park Forest over a considerable span of time. Nominees may now live elsewhere, or be deceased. Individuals or couples may be nominated. The person making the nomination does not have to live in Park Forest, and does not have to be a member of the society. Inductees will be chosen from among the eligible nominees by the Park Forest Historical Society, and announced early in 2013. The induction ceremony will be held at Freedom Hall on April 14, 2013. South Suburban Family Shelter (SSFS) is seeking cell phone donations for their ongoing fundraising program. Safe Disposal Program – Bio-waste

The Park Forest Health Department and Environment Commission have partnered to provide information on the proper disposal of bio-waste such as used syringes or lancets (medical sharps). Begin by purchasing a Sharps container to dispose of your medical sharps for $10 at the Park Forest Health Department.
