Occupy Chicago to Protest on Wednesday Outside Alvarez Fundraiser at US Cellular Field

Campaign to Free the NATO 5

CHICAGO–(ENEWSPF)–September 11, 2012.  On Wednesday, September 12, State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez’s supporters will shell out $200 per seat at US Cellular Field to raise funds for her re-election campaign. Outside the park, beginning at 5:30pm, advocates for the NATO 5 will join speakers from Chicago’s south and west side communities, to demand State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez stop arrests and prosecution of peaceful protesters, and punish misconduct and abuse perpetrated by the Chicago Police Department.

“Why has Alvarez re-indicted economic justice activists, such as Danny Johnson, on trumped up charges while the police officer who killed Rekia Boyd is still free?” asks Rachael Perrotta, a member of the Campaign to Free the NATO 5. “Why is Alvarez blowing so much public money on NATO-related court cases, when she has yet to pursue internal prosecutions related to the Jon Burge torture cases?”
“According to official statics cited by the People’s Hearing on Police Violence, from 2009 to 2011, there have been 55 deaths committed by the Chicago Police Department. 94% of these deaths are non-white,” says Pat Hunt, a member of the Campaign to Free the NATO 5. “It’s easy for Alvarez and the CPD to pat themselves on the back for brutalizing peaceful protestors, but when it comes to confronting the structural racism of Chicago law enforcement they are silent and useless.”
