Thorn Creek Audubon Society will be hosting its Second Annual Hummingbird Festival on Saturday, August 18 at the Wetland Discovery Center at the Park Forest Aqua Center, 30 N. Orchard. Bird Expert Vernon Kleen will band some of the birds that visit the newly planted Hummingbird Garden. Participants will have the opportunity to ‘adopt’ a hummingbird. Route 66 Overnight Senior Trip – Registration Deadline – Monday, August 27
On Thursday, September 6 at 7:15 a.m., the bus will depart from Park Forest Village Hall, 350 Victory Drive, to begin the Route 66 Overnight Senior Trip. John Weiss will take us back in time as we travel historic Route 66 from Dwight, IL to Springfield, IL where we will visit pieces of history and hear stories of Route 66 throughout the years. We will meet our tour guide in Dwight, IL where we will enjoy a full breakfast before beginning our adventure. Some of the sites we will visit include a swinging bridge, the Beer Nuts Factory, the world’s largest covered wagon and the Abraham Lincoln Museum. We will stay the night in Springfield at the Route 66 Hotel, which includes a pool, so bring your suit!
The bus will return to Park Forest on Friday, September 7 at approximately 5:30 p.m. The fee for single occupancy is $205 per person; double occupancy is $170 per person. The fee includes round-trip motor coach transportation, tour guide, hotel and all meals (2 breakfasts, 2 lunches, 1 dinner and a snack). Registration deadline is Monday, August 17. Register in person at the Recreation and Parks Department of Village Hall or register over the phone with a major credit card at 708-748-2005. Park Forest House Museum – Summer Exhibit Features Early Years of the Aqua Center
The 1950s Park Forest House Museum, 141 Forest Boulevard, is ready for summer visitors. The museum is open Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. or for small groups by appointment. Donation is Adults- $5; 12 & under free with a paying adult. Group tours may be subject to special pricing. The tour is free with the purchase of a Marshall Field’s Park Forest Store brick at 1 for $15; 2 for $25. Convenient, free, street parking is available right outside the front door. The museum is operated by the Park Forest Historical Society and sponsored by Andrew Brown of Central Park Townhomes. This summer the museum is featuring a small display on the early years of the Aqua Center swimming pool complex, once the largest in the state of Illinois. The transcript of an oral history on the Aqua Center is in the living room, illustrated with photos of the original layout. On display in the china cabinet are original badges from the ‘Badge Pool.’ Youngsters used to have to prove they could swim the length of that pool to earn the badge to pin on their swimsuits. Donations Needed to Help Rebuild Central Park Wetlands Observation Deck
As Park Forest residents know, a fire occurred in the Central Park Wetlands on June 27 that resulted in approximately $10,000 in damages. Unfortunately, the deductible on the Village’s insurance policy is higher than the damages, so an insurance claim cannot be made. The observation deck was used by many in the south suburbs – young and old alike, to enjoy the beauty of the Central park Wetlands’ variety of native plants and view the more than 100 species of birds that have been identified by volunteers from the Thorn Creek Audubon Society. In the true spirit of Park Forest, a grassroots effort to rebuild the observation deck has been started by George and Connie Manno. In addition, the Environment Commission, Recreation & Parks Advisory Board and Park Forest Rotary Club are assisting with the fundraising. Second Annual Hummingbird Festival to be Held at Wetland Discovery Center –Saturday, August 18
Those who are fascinated by our smallest birds will have a chance to see Ruby-throated Hummingbirds at close range and even ‘adopt’ one at the Second Annual Hummingbird Festival on August 18 from 4 pm. to 7 p.m. The Festival will be held at the Wetland Discovery Center at the Park Forest Aqua Center, 30 N. Orchard. Bird Expert Vernon Kleen will band some of the birds that visit the Hummingbird Garden planted there. The birds will be captured in remote-controlled traps attached to the Center’s hummingbird feeders, weighed, sexed and measured, and then banded so avian scientists can learn more about them, especially their migration patterns. Kleen is one of the few licensed hummingbird banders in Illinois,. Anyone who attends has the opportunity to ‘adopt’ one of the tiny creatures by making a $5 donation to the Illinois Audubon Land Acquisitions Fund. Donors will receive a special adoption certificate and have the privilege of holding, then releasing, their own bird as it continues to migrate south for the winter. Those adopting birds will be notified if their bird is recaptured. The $5 fee goes to purchase land in Illinois for wildlife preservation.

South Suburban Family Shelter Used Cell Phone Collection Drive
South Suburban Family Shelter (SSFS) is seeking cell phone donations for their ongoing fundraising program. Proceeds from the collection fund the critical programs and services provided to families who experience domestic violence. All victim services are provided free of charge and are available in English and Spanish. Cell phone collection sites currently include:
- SSFS Administrative Office, 18139 Harwood, Homewood, IL
- Bergstein’s NY Deli, 200 Dixie Highway, Chicago Heights, IL
- Doyle Designed Salon, 2630 Flossmoor Rd., Flossmoor, IL

Local Recycling Resources and Proper Disposal of Unused Medicine
Do you have old televisions, computers, video games or other electronics or household appliances that need to be recycled? Want to know how to properly dispose of old or unused medication? Click on the "Recycling" icon found on the top of eNews Park Forest and you will find useful information on proper recycling/disposal that will not only be good for the environment, but in some cases, earn you a few dollars as well.
Safe Disposal Program – Bio-waste
The Park Forest Health Department and Environment Commission have partnered to provide information on the proper disposal of bio-waste such as used syringes or lancets (medical sharps). Begin by purchasing a Sharps container to dispose of your medical sharps for $10 at the Park Forest Health Department. Return the filled container to the Park Forest Health Department and purchase a new container. Call Brenda Walker at 708-748-1118 for more information.
Recycle Used Cell Phones and Cell Phone Accessories
The Rotary Club of Park Forest is conducting a used cell phone and accessory collection drive to benefit the families and programs of the South Suburban Family Shelter. Donated items can be placed in the collection box located in the lobby of Village Hall. For more information, call Denyse Carreras at 708-283-5603.
