Chicago, IL-(ENEWSPF)- Cook County Clerk David Orr issued a statement praising the Seventh Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals decision granting a stay of a previous court’s ruling regarding Election Day Registration.

Orr’s statement follows:

I applaud the Seventh Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals decision granting a stay of the ruling initially issued by the U.S. District Court regarding Election Day Registration.

Election Day Registration has been the law since 2014. More than 110,000 voters took advantage of EDR statewide during the March primary.

Many voters who move don’t update their registrations, and when they show up in their precincts on Election Day, they can only vote if EDR is an option. We shouldn’t turn these people away.

Today’s ruling will ensure tens of thousands people are not denied the right to vote on November 8 and allows Illinois to continue to be a leader in election reform.
