Summer at Thorn Creek Nature Center


Park Forest, IL-(ENEWSPF)- Looking for something to do with the kids this summer? Come visit Thorn Creek Nature Center and take a hike in Thorn Creek Woods! Thorn Creek Nature Center has several exhibits, including a children’s corner, insect displays, bird viewing window and much more! Thorn Creek Woods allows hikers to view wildlife such as deer and their fawns over three and a half miles of trails. Pack a picnic lunch and come on out for a day of free fun! Thorn Creek Nature Center, located at 247 Monee Road, Park Forest is open Friday-Sunday, noon-4p.m. and the trails are open daily from dawn to dusk. 

As the sun goes down many animals are just becoming active, and even though it is hard to see them with the fading light, you know they are there because of their calls. Join a Forest Preserve District naturalist at Thorn Creek Woods on Friday, August 3, 7:30 -9 p.m. to explore the Sounds of the Night-Insects. You can hear a very special group of insects that have the gift of song like no other. Sunset is the best time to explore and listen to these gifted songsters as we bid adieu to the day shift and welcome in the night shift! Please note that this program will take place outdoors, hiking preserve trails over uneven terrain. This program is free and for all ages Registration required by August 1: call 708.946.2216.

Resident summer birds have settled in with nests built, baby birds being fledged, and the search for food on! Join a Forest Preserve District naturalist on a Morning Bird Hike at Thorn Creek Woods, Saturday, August 4, 8-10 a.m. On this hike Vireos will be highlighted for the first 15 minutes of the program with information, calls, pictures and props. If you are new to birding or need to brush up on birding, please call us ahead of time and staff will meet with you before the start of the bird hike! Come dressed for the weather and bring your favorite bird guide and binoculars. Participants will enjoy a hike on natural surface trails across uneven terrain. This program is free and for those age16 or older. Registration required by August 2: call 708.946.2216.

Calling all kids ages 50 years and older! Join us for Nature Camp for Seniors on Thursday, August 9 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Did you go to camp when you were a kid? Or maybe you never did, and were always jealous of your friends that got to spend the summer away at camp. If so, then this fun-filled program is for you! 

Learn how to observe the trees, birds and mammals that call Thorn Creek Nature Preserve home. Camp includes nature crafts and activities too. This program will take you outside for a portion of the day, so be sure to wear your walking shoes and long pants! Nature Camp for Seniors is for ages 50 years and older. Cost is $7 per person.  Lunch is provided. Registration is required by Tuesday August 7.
