CBC Health Braintrust Chairwoman Rep. Robin Kelly Statement on SCOTUS Upholding Affordable Care Act

Washington, DC—(ENEWSPF)—June 25, 2015. U.S. Congresswoman Robin Kelly (D-IL), chairwoman of the Congressional Black Caucus Health Braintrust, today issued the following statement in response to the U.S. Supreme Court decision in King v. Burwell preserving nationwide tax subsidies under the Affordable Care Act.

“Today’s decision is a victory for the health equity movement in ensuring that millions of Americans will continue to have access to quality, affordable healthcare. The stakes for the African American community were particularly high as blacks suffer disproportionately from adverse health conditions and the preventive care central to the Affordable Care Act is key to reversing negative health outcomes,” Kelly said. “Nearly 1.7 million African Americans adults have gained health insurance coverage through the ACA and roughly 7.8 million African Americans with private insurance now have access to expanded services without cost.  Additionally, 8 million African Americans with pre-existing conditions have gained coverage and 390,000 African American women gained access to maternal care. On behalf of these individuals and their families, I thank the Court for preserving their access to the care they need to lead healthier lives.”
