NARAL Pro-Choice America Launches New Campaign Called ‘Own It’ to Hold GOP Presidential Candidates Accountable for their Records

All GOP Candidates Receive “F” Grades For Failing To Stand Up For Women

Washington, DC–(ENEWSPF)–April 24, 2015.  Yesterday—in advance of the Faith and Freedom forum this weekend in Iowa—NARAL Pro-Choice America launched a new national campaign to hold GOP presidential candidates accountable for their failure to defend a woman’s right to choose and, in many cases, denying women basic health care.

In the first phase of this campaign, NARAL released a comprehensive guide to the positions of GOP candidates on a host of issues related to women’s reproductive rights and freedoms.

Every current GOP hopeful received an “F” in the report for their shameful records and rhetoric when it comes to reproductive freedom.

“In 2014, we saw anti-choice Republican candidates run from their records and try to mislead voters. Those days are over,” said Ilyse Hogue, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America. “The current crop of GOP hopefuls have taken many positions far outside the mainstream and we intend to hold them accountable. Our campaign will force them to own their records and make it much harder for candidates to run away from their true positions in the primary and general election. These politicians are directly in opposition to most Americans who trust women to make their own health care decisions and no one who sees their records, as exposed by this nation-wide campaign, will trust them with the White House.”

Anna Greenberg, senior vice president at Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research, who joined Hogue at the campaign launch, said, “In the 2014 midterms, the GOP toned down its rhetoric and many candidates obscured their true position on issues like access to reproductive health care. The party devoted a lot of energy to training its candidates to be less scary to women, to perform better on abortion rights and to appear more moderate. Perhaps it’s not surprising, given that polling data clearly shows that threatening the safety and well-being of women and families has a negative consequence for candidates among Republican, Independent and Democratic voters of all ages.”

NARAL Pro-Choice America members and activists will be in Iowa at the Faith and Freedom forum this weekend to call on all candidates present to #OwnIt, asking why they believe women can’t be trusted to make their own health care decisions in consultation with their doctors.
