Statement by Representative Jan Schakowsky on President Obama’s Actions to Address the Ebola Outbreak

Washington, DC –(ENEWSPF)—September 17, 2014. President Barack Obama spoke yesterday about the Ebola outbreak in West Africa from the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta. The strategy has four key goals to address the epidemic:

Controlling the epidemic at its source in West Africa;

Mitigating second-order impacts, including blunting the economic, social, and political tolls in the region;

Engaging and coordinating with a broader global audience; and,

Fortifying global health security infrastructure in the region and beyond.

Rep. Jan Schakowsky released the following statement on the President’s strategy to address the Ebola outbreak:

“I commend President Barack Obama for his strong action to address the Ebola outbreak in West Africa.  As the President said yesterday, this strategy is ‘The largest international response in the history of the Centers for Disease Control.’

Health care workers – including those from organizations like Doctors without Borders and Partners in Health – are struggling to respond to the growing need.  They need U.S. help to save lives, prevent further infections, and provide stability in the affected region.  The President’s proposal is a smart and effective response.

Under the CDC’s leadership, the global medical community will help meet the challenge of Ebola. The President has called on world leaders to help provide medicine and equipment.  In addition, the President is sending approximately 3,000 U.S. military forces to the region to set up 17 treatment centers and train up to 500 health care worker a week.  As important, he is acting to improve the health care structure so that countries will be better equipped to respond to public health emergencies in the future.

Just as we have been able to stop outbreaks in the past, we can eliminate the threat of Ebola today.  That is why I so strongly support the President’s call to action.
