Cancer continues to be the leading disease-related cause of death among children and adolescents in the U.S. A study in the October 2014 Pediatrics, “Cancer Incidence Rates and Trends Among Children and Adolescents in the United States, 2001-2009,” published online Sept. 8, analyzes data from state cancer registries regarding cancer diagnoses.
The evidence shows the overall rate of all cancers remained stable over time, but there was an increase in cancers among African-American children and adolescents. Researchers noted an increase in thyroid cancer, especially among adolescents and those living in the Northeast, South and West regions of the U.S. Renal carcinomas also increased significantly. The study provides data on previously unreported trends in cancer incidence, which may help develop new preventive measures.
