More Republicans Sign On to Respect for Marriage Act, Feb. 2, 2015

New York –(ENEWSPF)–February 2, 2015.  Today Congressman Carlos Cuberlo (R-FL) and Congressman Robert Dold (R-IL) became cosponsors of the Respect for Marriage Act, a bill that would repeal the Defense of Marriage Act and ensure that the federal government respects all valid marriages across all agencies. They join an increasing number of high-profile Republicans who have expressed support for marriage in recent months, including fellow House Republican cosponsors Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL) and Richard Hanna (R-NY).

“The growth of support among Republicans for the freedom to marry shows that America is, indeed, ready to turn the page on past discrimination and that it is time for the Supreme Court to bring the country to national resolution,” said Evan Wolfson, president of Freedom to Marry. “A majority of Republicans under 50 and a super-majority of Republicans under 30 support the freedom to marry — alongside a majority of Independents and a super-majority of the American people. Congressman Dold and Congressman Cuberlo are doing the right thing for their party, as well as for families and the American people.”

61% of Republicans under 30 support the freedom to marry.

Since the first congressional introduction of the Respect for Marriage Act nearly four years ago, Freedom to Marry’s bipartisan federal team has lobbied congressmembers and their staffs in support of the freedom to marry and on why DOMA hurts same-sex couples and their families. Freedom to Marry also launched and co-chairs the Respect for Marriage Coalition, a coalition of more than 100 health, civil rights, labor, LGBT, and other organizations working to pass the bill and advance the freedom to marry.

The bill was reintroduced in Congress in January.
