Joseph D. Magee was born to the proud parents Rosie (Hall) Magee and Branson Magee on November 13, 1915 in Prentiss, Mississippi. Joseph who was often referred to as “JD” was the first of nine children born into the union. Preceding Joseph in death were his seven siblings Augusta, Ernest, Grover, Nathan, Dovie Oatis, Lovie Powell and Wylean Berry. Joseph received his formal education at Prentiss Normal and Industrial Institute where he met and married his high school sweetheart, the late Ruth McInnis. They were married 62 years at the time of her death in 1998.
Joseph accepted Christ at an early age at Point Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church in Mount Olive, Mississippi. He spent the rest of his life serving God which was reflected in the care of his family, participation in the church and his contribution to his community.
In the early 1940’s, Joseph moved his young family to Chicago, IL to provide a better life and education for his children. Joseph worked hard to care for his family and was employed through the years in a number of positions. His longest years of employment were with United Airlines where he retired in 1980 after 25 years of service. During his years with United, Joseph was also an entrepreneur, owning his own dry cleaning business.
Joseph attended Olivet Baptist Church in the 1940’s and 50’s then later became a member at Progressive Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher and Superintendent. He later attended Calvary United Protestant Church where he and Ruth renewed their marriage vows of 50 years. Prior to Joseph’s failing health, he was a faithful member of Mayo AME Church where he especially enjoyed the Wednesday prayer group and the Men’s Ministry.
Joseph thoroughly enjoyed his neighbors and living in Park Forest. He took joy in knowing and meeting fellow Park Foresters. He was proud to have served as a board member of the Food Pantry of Rich Township. Joseph received a certificate of recognition in honor of his service to the 80th House District Legislative Advisory Council.
Joseph experienced many joyful and memorable events through the years, but two that especially brought smiles to his face include the renewal of his marriage vows and the celebration of 50 years with Ruth and his trip to Germany in 1992 to visit his grand daughter and twin great grand daughters.
Joseph indeed was able to realize his dream for his family which is reflected in the achievements of his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He will be remembered as a gentle, loving and caring husband, father and neighbor.
Joseph’s life is celebrated by his daughter Ann (Frank) Walker, two sons, Howard (Donna) and Kenneth (Roberta); one brother Dewey of Jackson, Mississippi; seventeen grandchildren; twenty four great grandchildren; and one great great grandchild. He also leaves many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Preceding Joseph in death were his two sons Joseph, Jr.and Robert.
