SPRINGFIELD--(ENEWSPF)--July 16, 2009.  In recognition that July is Elder Abuse Awareness Month in Illinois, State Representative Anthony DeLuca (D-Chicago Heights) is reminding local residents of the warning signs of elder abuse and the resources that are available.

"We must do everything we can to ensure that our older residents are receiving proper care and that they are in no way mistreated by their caregivers or scam artists," DeLuca said.  "I encourage everyone to pay special attention to the welfare of our older citizens and alert the proper authorities if you suspect there may be abuse or neglect.  I will also do my part in the State Legislature to push for new laws that punish criminals who prey on seniors."

Elder abuse is defined as physical, mental, sexual mistreatment, neglect or fiancial scams perpetrated on a person 60 years of age or older.

There are a few important signs to be aware of that a senior citizen is being subjected to abuse, including: unexplained or untreated injuries; scratches, cuts and bruises; changes in social behavior; reclusive behavior on the part of caregivers; dehydration and lack of proper nutrition; and unexpected or unusual changes in banking practices.

"While nearly 11,000 cases of elder abuse were reported to authorities in Illinois over the past year, many cases will go unnoticed or unreported," said Sheryl Ford, Director of the Bloom Township Senior Department.  "It is my hope that because of efforts to increase awareness of this extremely serious issue, more people will be aware of the signs of elder abuse and help prevent someone they know from being abused.  I look forward to working with Representative DeLuca and others in our community to stand up for seniors and against those who abuse them."

For more information about elder abuse, visit www.state.il.us/aging.  The Chicago Heights lawmaker also reminds local residents that Illinois has an Elder Abuse Hotline that can be called at any time by victims, or anyone who suspects elder abuse is occurring.  Anyone can contact the trained professionals at the Elder Abuse Hotline at 866-800-1409.  All information is strictly confidential and reports of elder abuse are forwarded to local senior protective service agencies or law enforcement immediately for investigation.
