WASHINGTON, D.C.--(ENEWSPF)--June 7, 2011.  U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) today issued the following statement after learning that the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District (MWRD) of Greater Chicago voted to support the disinfection of wastewater before it enters portions of the Chicago and Calumet Rivers.

“Chicago is a world-class city with an ambitious environmental agenda. But while Chicago is listed among the nation’s greenest cities, the City’s record when it comes to the Chicago River is disappointing.

“Last week, I hosted a meeting with representatives from both sides of the disinfection debate. At times, the conversation was spirited, but I felt it was important for everyone to have a seat at the table to discuss the future of this important waterway.

“Today’s overwhelming vote by the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District’s Board in favor of wastewater disinfection is historic.

“Now it’s time for our generation to save the Chicago River. A world-class city should have a world-class river.”
