Unemployment Insurance Weekly Claims Report for Week Ending August 6, 2016

SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending August 6, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 266,000, a decrease of 1,000 from the previous week’s revised level. The previous week’s level was revised down by 2,000 from 269,000 to 267,000. The 4-week moving average was 262,750, an increase of 3,000 from the previous week’s revised average. The previous week’s average was revised down by 500 from 260,250 to 259,750.

There were no special factors impacting this week’s initial claims. This marks 75 consecutive weeks of initial claims below 300,000, the longest streak since 1970.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.6 percent for the week ending July 30, unchanged from the previous week’s unrevised rate. The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending July 30 was 2,155,000, an increase of 14,000 from the previous week’s revised level. The previous week’s level was revised up 3,000 from 2,138,000 to 2,141,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,143,000, an increase of 500 from the previous week’s revised average. The previous week’s average was revised up by 750 from 2,141,750 to 2,142,500.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 231,356 in the week ending August 6, an increase of 12,173 (or 5.6 percent) from the previous week. The seasonal factors had expected an increase of 13,098 (or 6.0 percent) from the previous week. There were 239,326 initial claims in the comparable week in 2015.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.5 percent during the week ending July 30, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,105,121, an increase of 110 (or 0.0 percent) from the preceding week. The seasonal factors had expected a decrease of 12,848 (or -0.6 percent) from the previous week. A year earlier the rate was 1.6 percent and the volume was 2,209,980.

The total number of people claiming benefits in all programs for the week ending July 23 was 2,144,819, a decrease of 34,998 from the previous week. There were 2,260,417 persons claiming benefits in all programs in the comparable week in 2015.

No state was triggered “on” the Extended Benefits program during the week ending July 23.

Initial claims for UI benefits filed by former Federal civilian employees totaled 772 in the week ending July 30, a decrease of 88 from the prior week. There were 1,055 initial claims filed by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 34 from the preceding week.

There were 8,172 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending July 23, an increase of 612 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 13,795, an increase of 664 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending July 23 were in Puerto Rico (3.1), Alaska (2.7), Connecticut (2.7), New Jersey (2.7), Pennsylvania (2.4), West Virginia (2.3), California (2.2), Rhode Island (2.2), Wyoming (2.1), and Massachusetts (2.0).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending July 30 were in California (+487), Kansas (+405), Indiana (+315), Virginia (+292), and Washington (+285), while the largest decreases were in Michigan (-1,864), Illinois (-1,458), Oregon (-1,084), Georgia (-1,021), and Alabama (-908).
