Flynn’s Resignation Proves Need for Commission to Investigate Russian Interference, Says Center for American Progress’ Neera Tanden

Washington, D.C. —(ENEWSPF)–February 14, 2017.  Michael Flynn has resigned as President Donald Trump’s national security adviser over allegations of inappropriate or illegal contact with the Russian government. These allegations raise serious questions about the ability of President Trump to safeguard American national security. They also question the veracity of claims that no one from the Trump campaign or the administration colluded with the Russian government’s interference in the 2016 presidential election. In light of this news, Center for American Progress President and CEO Neera Tanden issued the following statement:

The resignation of National Security Advisor Michael Flynn—after just three weeks on the job—again raises disturbing questions about contacts between members of Trump’s team and the Russian government. Only an independent, bipartisan commission can adequately investigate this historic scandal. Congress should establish such a commission immediately.

In the meantime, Flynn and every member of the Trump administration, campaign, or transition team who has ties with the Russian government should testify under oath before the congressional committees already investigating Putin’s attack on our democracy. The White House should also release transcripts of Flynn’s calls with Russian officials.

Michael Flynn’s resignation underscores that the Trump administration has been one of the most chaotic in modern history. The administration’s actions over the last three weeks have made Americans less safe. It is time for Republicans on Capitol Hill to join their Democratic colleagues to hold this administration accountable by forming an independent commission.
